Furumachi Geigi – Niigata 1945

The geisha of the Furumachi hanamachi (geisha district) in Niigata are called “Geigi”, the Kwantō area term for a geisha, and they have a long tradition dating back around 300 years. Immediately prior to World War II the Furumachi hanamachi was considered one of the three main geisha districts in Japan, on a par with Gion in Kyoto and Shinbashi in Tokyo.
